Thanksgiving Books

We love reading in our home, what better way to share time, learn and grow and pass on knowledge and traditions. Reading together means creating memories and growing in relationship. Today I want to share with you some of our Thanksgiving books we read.

One of our favorites that has a wonderful Christian message of hope and purpose is Squanto and the Miracle of Thanksgiving. This book is great for the younger audience, but can be a little long. Sometimes we read it in sections.

A book that we plan on reading 1 page from for 14 days of November is The Pilgrims at Plymouth (Landmark Books). This book goes into detail about the voyage on the mayflower and settling in the new land, with great pictures.

Thanksgiving: A Harvest Celebration is another one of our favorites. This has a little girl as the main character. It briefly talks about the voyage on the mayflower and then goes into more detail about the pilgrims first year. At the end of this book there is a large Thanksgiving Celebration.

Sharing the Bread- an Old-Fashioned Thanksgiving Story is a cute story with beautiful pictures of a family working together to get the thanksgiving meal on. The story is from a young boy’s perspective. He goes around to see what everyone is working on to get the meal ready. At the end the family all share’s their meal together.

The Very First Thanksgiving Day by Rhonda Gowler Greene is a slightly poetic telling of the first thanksgiving. I also love the artwork in this book. It starts at the first thanksgiving day and then goes backward in the story to when the pilgrims left their homes to sail on the Mayflower, then ends again at the first thanksgiving.

The Story of Thanksgiving by Nancy J. Skarmeas tells the story of thanksgiving for the youngest readers. This board book is easy to understand, has great pictures, and is a brief history of the first thanksgiving.

A book for older audiences that we love is Growing Together in Gratitude (Character Stories for Families). This book has a 2 page real life story of gratitude followed by discussion questions. We read one of these about every other night with my family. My oldest (age 5) participates some, but for the most part my husband and I are the only ones that discuss the story.  The stories in this book are amazing and truly inspiring. There are 7 stories in all.
